Foothill Kennel: World Class Pudelpointer Breeder

About the Breed:

A Pudelpointer is a unique hunting breed that came from a cross between the German hunting poodle (pudel) and the English Pointer. They are versatile gun dogs that are useful for a wide range of work in the fields, woods and water. Pudelpointer dogs are calm, self-controlled, and versatile with a distinct hunting instinct who lack game or gun shyness.

In Europe, Pudelpointer dogs are used to hunt hare, upland birds, ducks, geese, wild boar, and stag. In the United States they are used primarily for hunting quail, chukar, grouse, pheasant, and retrieving ducks and geese. They are also used to track wounded deer, locate rare endangered tortoise eggsites, guard owner’s campsites against grizzly bears, and for dock diving competitions.

The breed usually weighs between 55 and 75 pounds and stands between 21 and 26 in at the shoulder. Pudelpointer dogs have liver and occasionally black coats. They also have white markings on the chest. There are always a variety of coats in each given litter. Some are short-haired much like the English pointers or GSPs. The short hair coats are referred to as “slicks”. Others have longer, wiry, dense coats. Pudelpointer dogs are known for their beard like facial furnishings as well as on their feet. The breed sheds less than any other hunting breed and is hypoallergenic.

Pudelpointer dogs need regular exercise. Ideal conditions include play time in the backyard, preferably fenced, or being taken for frequent walks. They are very playful and love to run, hike, and play fetch. Pudelpointer dogs absolutely love the water and swimming.

Pudelpointer dogs outperform all other breeds in versatile hunting tests and can hunt anything. They are truly a world class versatile hunting and companion dog!
